driving home on the freeway it happened and I am full of dread and hate and some french toast.
the miata had a flattened rad hose and so last week decided to fix that by replacing it and a few mislght as wells condisting of flushing/cleaning the overflow bottle and cooling system replacing the thermostat and rad cap. I was hoping this would also fix the loud gurgling into the overflow after stopping but it did not.
I am worried I will be doing a headgasket now and warped head repairs.
here is what I know.
the fans work
the car doesnt lose coolant
the radiator is drawing and returning coolant to the overflow
if could help I woukd appreciate it. or at least send some doritos to soothe my jangled nerves.

Sounds like you still have a closed system if there is return/draw. Think happy thoughts. Also, I am assuming the coolant still looks like coolant, so more reason to be happy.

I had the gurgling thing, and took three steps to fix it: 1) new radiator cap, since the old one had a worn seal and wouldn't hold pressure, and 2) new thermostat, just in case, and 3) a full flush with distilled water, sealing the system back up and and running the engine at high rpm with no load to get the water pump really churning. Then drain and refill with coolant. It used to gurgle after freeway driving even if it was only 80 degrees out; yesterday it was 108 and there was no gurgle.
Are you sure you've gone all the way into overheating, or is it just the gurgling you're concerned about?

No white smoke in the first start in the morning? Does it smell sweet? How is the heater core? No wet carpet? How was the coolant when you drain it?

Check the heater hoses behind the engine near the firewall. They like to pin-hole leak on Miata's for some reason.
Did you bleed the system correctly after you did the work you described?
If your car is continually filling up the overflow and getting air in the system, it is almost certainly a headgasket issue.

yup I have a laser temp gauge thing there is a temp difference before and after heater so it must be doing things.

Well that's an interesting comment. After I replaced the radiator on my '99 a couple years back it has always gurgled fitfully after shutdown, and the cooling system has been less than ideal; on a hot Florida day in 5-MPH traffic the needle sometimes starts rising alarmingly above the midpoint where it usually sits (stupid gauge!). A couple times I have even pulled off the road to sit and let it cool down rather than having it bust a hose or worse the headgasket. I thought it might be a weak water pump but I will definitely give your technique a try next weekend, thanks for the tip!
